A timber frame can be accurately cut, square and properly plated, then still fail the test of a hard-working build if the connection is wrong. This metalwork connectors guide is for trade buyers and contractors who need to specify, stock and fit the parts that keep structural timber tied together – without gambling on light-gauge steel, vague labelling or missing fixings.

Metalwork is often treated as an add-on at the end of the materials list. On site, it is anything but. Joist hangers carry floor loads into supporting members. Restraint straps help control movement. Angle brackets stiffen corners and connections. A small component can affect load paths, inspection outcomes, programme time and the reputation of the merchant that supplied it.

Start with the connection, not the catalogue

The fastest way to choose the wrong connector is to start with its name. “Angle bracket” and “joist hanger” are broad categories, not specifications. The correct item depends on what is being joined, the direction of the force, the timber dimensions, the fixing method and the environment it will work in.

First establish whether the connection is carrying vertical load, resisting lateral movement, providing restraint, or simply holding members in position while the wider structure does its work. A joist seated in a hanger is a different job from a noggin held with an angle bracket. A wall plate needing restraint is different again. If the connector has a structural role, its load data and installation requirements matter more than its appearance.

Do not assume a deeper hanger automatically solves every problem. The hanger needs to suit the timber section and be fixed exactly as specified. Leaving holes empty, using the wrong nail type or forcing an oversized joist into the saddle can compromise performance. Where a connection is engineered, follow the drawing and the manufacturer’s published installation instructions rather than making a site substitution.

Angle brackets and framing angles

Angle brackets are the everyday workhorses of timber connections. They can secure framing corners, trimmers, posts, noggins and secondary members, depending on the bracket type and design. Look at gauge, hole pattern, leg length and whether the bracket is intended for light framing, general structural use or a specific high-load application. More steel is not always the answer. Restraint straps tie timber elements back to masonry or other structural members to help resist movement and uplift. They are frequently required at roof and floor level, and their position is usually dictated by the build specification.

Length matters, but so does the route of the strap. A strap that is bent carelessly, fixed into weak material or cut short to suit the job has lost the benefit it was selected for. Stock straight and bent formats where demand calls for them, and make sure the fixing options are clear at the point of sale.

Timber connectors and nail plates

Toothed timber connectors and nail plates are used for particular timber-to-timber connections, often alongside bolts or as part of a designed arrangement. They need even, proper seating. Hammering one side down and hoping the teeth will bite across the full plate is not good practice.

These products can be highly effective when used as designed, but they are less forgiving of casual installation. They are a good example of why product knowledge at the trade counter matters. The right part with the wrong method still creates a weak connection.

Post bases and post supports

Post bases keep timber posts located and, where required, separated from ground moisture. The choice depends on post size, whether the post is supporting a roof or fence, the substrate, and whether a bolt-down, cast-in or adjustable base is needed.

For exterior work, corrosion resistance and water management deserve proper attention. A treated timber post standing in trapped water will not be helped by a heavy bracket alone. The detail needs to let water drain and keep the timber from sitting in prolonged damp conditions.

Match the coating to the exposure

Most internal dry applications use galvanised steel connectors, but “galvanised” is not a complete specification. The coating level, intended exposure and project environment all need consideration. A connector that performs well in a dry internal partition may be unsuitable for an exposed garden structure, coastal location or building with persistent moisture.

External timber work commonly needs a higher level of corrosion protection. This becomes more critical where treated timber, damp timber, salt-laden air or chemical exposure is involved. There can also be compatibility considerations between timber treatments, connector coatings and the chosen nails, screws or bolts.

Trade buyers should avoid presenting a basic galvanised fitting as a universal outdoor solution. It may generate a quick sale, but premature corrosion produces callbacks, claims and a contractor who buys elsewhere next time. Stocking clearly separated internal and external options makes the decision easier and protects trust.

Fixings are part of the connector system

A connector is only as capable as the fixings holding it. Holes in metalwork are not decorative, and a hanger with ten specified fixing positions is not designed to perform with two random screws. The fixing type, diameter, length and quantity all influence the connection.

Connector nails are commonly specified because they suit the hole diameter and shear performance required. Structural screws may be suitable where approved for that connector and application, but ordinary woodscrews should not be treated as a substitute by default. Likewise, bolts and washers need to match the design where bolted connections are required.

This is a strong commercial opportunity for merchants. Present metalwork with compatible nails, structural screws, anchors and bolts, not as isolated boxes on different aisles. It makes ordering quicker and helps contractors leave with a complete connection rather than a problem waiting for site.

Avoid the failures that cost time later

Most connector issues are not caused by exotic engineering mistakes. They are caused by rushed selection and rushed fitting. Common failures include using a hanger that is too wide, omitting specified fixings, bending straps around obstructions, mixing incompatible metals, and installing external connectors where water is allowed to sit.

Another regular error is treating a connector as a cure for poor timber preparation. Twisted joists, out-of-level supports and badly cut ends make accurate installation difficult. Metalwork can secure a sound detail. It cannot turn poor setting-out into a dependable structure.

Where loads are unusual, spans are long, alterations affect a structural wall, or the work falls under a specific engineered design, get the design checked. A site judgement may be enough for a simple non-structural connection. It is not a replacement for the structural engineer’s requirements on a load-bearing build.
